The first known reference of this Souletine family date of the 15th century: Garzia Belaz de Medrano, noble from Navarre.〔http://www.armorial-pays-basque.com/modules/commune/article.php?PHPSESSID=25fb186ed5b30ee860b36f29ac7e866a&com_mode=thread&com_order=1&articleID=126〕 His grand son Gérard de Bela (1550–1633), was bailiff and lieutenant general of Jean de Belzunce, Captain-châtelain and Governor of Soule. Apart from Bela, this family used derived surnames like Belaspect, (Athanasius of) Belapeyre, (Jean of) Belagrace (nephew of the previous), (André of) Bela-Chéraute and Belapéritz. Athanasius of Belapeyre was a Catholic priest, vicar general and a prominent figure from Soule, and also was the son of Jacques de Bela, who was Protestant. Bela had the mill of Asconéguy and the Planterose House in Mauléon. The mill still has the arms of the family on its lintel dated 1767.
